As a practising GP, there will be times along your career journey where you will come into contact with a GP Recruitment Agency or GP Recruitment Manager.

Whether they’re an Agent (working for an external Agency) or a GP Recruitment Manager (internal employee for a Medical Centre group), they aim to learn more about you to see if you’re interested in medical opportunities they have available.

Your career is an important part of both your lifestyle and professional development – so Doctors often feel a lot of pressure about meeting with a GP Recruiter.

1. Relax

While technically it is a job interview, treat it more like a conversation.

When you meet with a GP Recruiter (who works internally within a medical centre network), they already know you’re a practising and qualified Doctor; so you have nothing to prove there. The actual aim of your meeting is for them to learn more about your personality and work style to see if there is an opportunity that would be the best fit for you.

Equally, it’s your opportunity to get to know them and their organisation too, so you can see if they match your needs.

So, relax and be yourself. That way, there’s no miscommunication and you have a better chance of it being a win/win situation.

2. Think about your goals beforehand

When you speak to a GP Recruiter, they’re looking to understand your career and lifestyle goals to find the right offer for you.

So, before you meet with them, take the time to consider things like:

  • Is there something lacking in your current role?
  • Are you looking for a higher income?
  • Do you want to work more days or fewer days?
  • Are you looking for more work/life balance?
  • Do you want to expand into special interest areas such as skin health?
  • What team or practice are you looking for?
  • Are you seeking to bill Privately or Bulk bill?
  • Do you want more job security and stability?

Sometimes, you may not have considered some of these factors, which can leave you wondering what is most important to you when the GP Recruiter asks.

Think about what you’re after first so you can explain things clearly; it will help you both.

3. Your Non-Negotiables

Every Doctor has factors that they’re not flexible on – and this is totally ok.

But, just like the previous tip, consider your non-negotiables before you meet with a GP Recruiter so you’re both on the same page with what you’re looking for.

Preferences regarding medical centre locations, billing style or certain hours can differ between Doctors. It’s best to be upfront from the start with your non-negotiables so there are no misunderstandings.

4. Use them as a Resource

GP Recruiters generally have years of experience in the medical career field and specialise in knowing all of the rules and regulations.

So, don’t be afraid to ask! They’re there to help you.

In fact, the more questions you ask, the better

You may wish to ask for more general information, guidance and support, or to learn about specifics like Registration, VISAs and travel.
They may even be able to get you in contact with the right professionals such as Lawyers and Real Estate agents.

5. Ask for a Clinic Tour

While it’s good to discuss options over the phone or a coffee, it’s also a great idea to request time to actually perform a site visit at one or a few of their medical centres.

This helps you get a genuine feel for the environment you may be working in and a look at the treatment rooms and equipment, as well as the opportunity to have a chat with staff and other Doctors.

After you’ve had a visit, you will have firsthand experience of what it’s like to practise medicine with this new group and if it’s something you’re interested in.

6. Negotiate

Remember- you’re there to make a deal.

So, put your ideas forward for the GP Recruiter to consider. You may not get everything or they may try and meet you halfway, but you never know unless you ask.

Put your suggestions forward and leave it in their hands to come back and present options to you.

However, it’s important to be realistic. If you present very strict terms, you could miss the opportunity you’re looking for – so discuss terms and find a good compromise.
