A contraceptive implant is a long-acting reversible form of contraception that is placed under the skin of the upper arm. Insertion, replacement, and removal may be performed by a suitably trained general practitioner where clinically appropriate.
During an initial consultation, the GP will review the patient’s medical history, discuss their contraceptive needs, and assess whether a contraceptive implant is a suitable option. The GP will explain how the implant works, possible side effects, potential risks, and alternative contraceptive options.
The procedure is generally performed using a local anaesthetic. Aftercare instructions and information about when the implant becomes effective will be provided. Follow-up care or referral to another medical practitioner may be arranged where required.
